Landmark initiative brings the UAE hospitality sector together under a shared platform for collaboration, measurable environmental performance and industry-wide sustainability action

SHARJAH: The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) officially launched the Emirates Hospitality Sustainability Alliance (EHSA) at Coral Beach Resort Sharjah, marking a significant new chapter in advancing environmental sustainability across the UAE’s dynamic hospitality sector.
The landmark gathering brought together hospitality leaders, sustainability professionals, industry stakeholders and partners, united by a common ambition: to move sustainable hospitality beyond individual commitments towards collective action, shared accountability and measurable impact.
The establishment of EHSA responds to an increasingly important reality. While hospitality organisations across the UAE are implementing sustainability initiatives and making significant environmental commitments and social impacts, the scale and complexity of today’s environmental challenges require greater collaboration, knowledge exchange and coordinated action across the industry.
EHSA has therefore been established as a dedicated platform to connect the sector, facilitate the exchange of experience and good practices, encourage innovation and create a stronger foundation for addressing shared sustainability priorities.
Speaking at the launch, Dr Habiba Al Mar’ashi, Co-Founder and Chairperson of the Emirates Environmental Group, said, “today represents much more than the launch of a new Alliance. It marks the beginning of a collective journey for the UAE hospitality sector one that brings together ambition, collaboration, accountability and measurable action. Many organisations are already doing important work. The opportunity before us is to connect these efforts, strengthen them and create a platform through which the hospitality industry can move forward collectively. EHSA has been established to create that connection.”
Dr Al Mar’ashi further added, “Sustainability cannot remain an aspiration or a collection of isolated initiatives. If we want to create meaningful change, we must be able to understand where we are, identify where improvement is required and measure the progress we make. EHSA has been established to create the collaborative environment needed to support this journey, bringing the sector together to exchange knowledge, address shared challenges and progressively strengthen sustainability performance.”
The launch of EHSA marks the beginning of a broader journey rather than a single initiative. The Alliance has a strong pipeline of future programmes and initiatives designed to support the hospitality sector in advancing its sustainability performance. Among these is the future development of a dedicated sustainability standard for the hospitality sector, which will be introduced at a later stage.
Through this evolving programme of work, EHSA aims to provide the sector with opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange and practical action, while progressively building the tools and mechanisms needed to support measurable and continuous sustainability improvement across the UAE’s hospitality industry.
The UAE has established itself as one of the world’s foremost tourism and hospitality destinations. With the continued expansion and evolution of the sector comes both an opportunity and a responsibility to demonstrate that hospitality excellence and environmental responsibility can progress together.
Hospitality operations intersect with some of the most important sustainability challenges facing society, including energy and water consumption, waste generation, food waste, procurement, supply chains, resource efficiency and consumer behaviour. At the same time, hotels and hospitality organisations interact every day with thousands of employees, guests, suppliers and communities, giving the sector enormous potential to influence positive environmental behaviour.
Through EHSA, participating organisations will have opportunities to exchange knowledge and good practices, strengthen capabilities, explore innovative solutions, identify opportunities for collaboration and work collectively on shared environmental priorities.
The ultimate goal is not sustainability for the sake of compliance, but sustainability that becomes embedded within operations, decision-making, organisational culture and the guest experience.
As one of the country’s most visible and internationally connected industries, hospitality has considerable potential to contribute to these national ambitions. EHSA seeks to strengthen this contribution by connecting environmental ambition with practical implementation and measurable outcomes.
The Alliance will also encourage engagement across the wider hospitality ecosystem, recognising that meaningful transformation requires cooperation not only among hotels and hospitality groups, but also among government entities, suppliers, service providers, sustainability professionals, environmental organisations, academia and other stakeholders across the value chain.
Following the launch, EEG will continue working with hospitality organisations and relevant stakeholders to expand participation in the Alliance, strengthen industry dialogue and advance collaborative sustainability action across the sector. The focus will be on ensuring that the momentum generated at the launch translates into meaningful action beyond the event itself.
“The true measure of what we launched today will not be the number of people who attended this gathering,” Dr Al Mar’ashi said.
“It will be the partnerships that are created, the practices that improve, the resources that are conserved, the waste that is prevented and the measurable environmental improvements that follow.
“Our invitation to the hospitality sector is clear: join us, contribute your experience, share your challenges and become part of shaping the next chapter of sustainable hospitality in the UAE.”
The launch of the Emirates Hospitality Sustainability Alliance represents an important step towards creating a more coordinated and collaborative approach to sustainability within the UAE hospitality industry.
Through EHSA, EEG is creating a platform that brings the sector together to exchange knowledge, strengthen collaboration, share good practices and translate individual sustainability commitments into collective progress and measurable impact. Looking ahead, the Alliance will also introduce a pipeline of initiatives to further support the sector’s sustainability journey, including the future development of a dedicated sustainability standard for the hospitality sector.
Dr Al Mar’ashi concluded, “the UAE hospitality sector is recognised globally for its ambition, innovation and pursuit of excellence. We now have an opportunity to ensure that environmental leadership becomes an equally defining characteristic.
“Today, we have created the platform and introduced a pathway for progress. What happens next depends on our collective willingness to participate, collaborate and act.
“31 August 2026 is therefore not the culmination of this journey. It is our starting point.”
