KNPC advances plans for SAF & low-carbon aviation fuel

To achieve this vital objective, the company will conduct comprehensive feasibility studies to explore options for importing and blending sustainable fuels, as well as developing local production mechanisms for LCAF. The technical and financial assessments will be presented to the Sustainability Committee at KNPC, and then forwarded to the Sustainability Steering Committee at KPC. The goal is to establish an inclusive roadmap and timeline for implementing groundbreaking environmental projects, targeting completion by 2050.

These initiatives are designed to keep pace with the rapid advancements and changes in the oil and gas industry, both locally and internationally. In collaboration with KPC, KNPC will also update its long-term strategic plan, which extends up to 2050. This modernization will cover all sectors, core activities, and various functional areas within the company, ensuring alignment with contemporary global trends. The energy transformation strategy of KNPC is based on the independent oil and gas forecasts issued by Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), which enhance sustainable growth opportunities and ensure the continuous competitiveness of the State of Kuwait in global energy markets, with full commitment to shoulder environmental responsibility and reduce the carbon footprint of industrial and production processes.

As Kuwait moves towards a green oil future, data revealed that KOC entered a new historic phase in the local oil industry by launching environmental initiatives and advanced technological projects that will pave the way to achieving zero carbon neutrality by the year 2050. According to an oil source who spoke to the newspaper about these developments, the qualitative transformation being pursued by KNPC proves the commitment of Kuwait to abide by international climate agreements and in response to the vision of KPC in adopting clean and sustainable energy solutions. The new roadmap is considered the foundation for developing a smart and low-emission infrastructure that covers all oil facilities, including the facilities affiliated with Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC), which was merged with KNPC recently. The source confirmed the completion of the preliminary feasibility study for renewable energy sources and their alternatives, pointing out that the actual work started by drawing an integrated road map which includes technological applications and environmental initiatives aimed to reduce carbon emissions, such that this step is considered a fundamental shift in the march of the local oil sector towards environmental sustainability and reliance on clean energy solutions.

The source added that the tremendous efforts exerted by the company aim to develop a sustainable infrastructure relying on smart and innovative solutions. These efforts are structured in successive short, medium and long-term phases. The ongoing plans will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the local oil sector by using advanced solar energy technology, implementing carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) techniques, and adopting innovative carbon offsetting mechanisms. This is in addition to the transition from traditional fuels to blue hydrogen— a fuel that offers superior efficiency within the future energy landscape and has minimal environmental impact. Due to the growing importance of combating climate change—a key sustainable development goal that Kuwait intends to achieve, the company launched specialized initiatives focusing on the biofuel and low-carbon fuel sectors.
