KARACHI: Consulate of Italy in Karachi organized the Ninth Edition of Fare Cinema (Italian Cinema Week) <a href="https://middleeastdaily.net/ooredoo-kuwait-advances-ai-driven-network-with-successful-deployment-of-nwdaf-technology/”>with a tribute to legendary director, Ettore Scola The Consulate of Italy in Karachi organized the ninth edition of Fare Cinema 2026 (Italian Cinema Week), a thematic initiative promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaboration with the Nueplex Cinema in Karachi.
The annual event celebrates Italian cinema worldwide, showcasing the country’s rich cinematic heritage and recognizing the excellence of professionals across the film industry – from directors and screenwriters to actors, set designers, and technicians. As part of this year’s celebrations, the Consulate of Italy in Karachi paid tribute to one of Italy’s most influential filmmakers, Ettore Scola, by screening two of his acclaimed masterpieces: La Famiglia (1987) and La Cena (1998). Through these films, audiences in Karachi had the opportunity to experience Scola’s unique storytelling and his profound exploration of family, relationships, and society. Welcoming the guests, The Consul of Italy in Karachi, Mr. Fabrizio Bielli extended his sincere appreciation to the Nueplex Cinemas, the event’s venue partner, for its continued support and longstanding commitment to promoting Italian cinema in Karachi. Born on 10 May 1931 in Trevico, Italy, Ettore Scola was one of the most celebrated Italian directors and screenwriters of the twentieth century. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Scola chronicled Italy’s historical, political, and social transformations with wit, sensitivity, and deep humanism.
Beginning his career at the age of 15 as a ghostwriter and illustrator for the satirical magazine Marc’Aurelio, he later co-wrote iconic films such as Il Sorpasso (1962), directed by Dino Risi, before making his directorial debut in 1964 with “Se permettete parliamo di donne”. Scola passed away in Rome in 2016 at the age of 84, leaving behind an enduring legacy in world cinema.
The selected films exemplify Scola’s remarkable ability to portray universal human experiences through intimate settings. La Famiglia unfolds within the home, exploring the evolving dynamics of family life across generations, while La Cena uses the setting of a restaurant to reveal the complexities of human relationships and social interaction. Together, these films demonstrate how everyday spaces become the backdrop for life’s defining moments.
Consul Bielli expressed that the themes explored in Scola’s work resonate strongly with audiences in both Italy and Pakistan. The importance of family, the home, shared meals, and gatherings with loved ones are values deeply rooted in both cultures. By screening these films, the Consulate hopes to highlight the cultural affinities that unite the two countries and to foster greater appreciation of Italian cinema as a bridge between peoples and traditions. The Consulate of Italy invited the selected guests, film enthusiasts, members of the business and cultural community to attend the screenings and celebrate the enduring legacy of Ettore Scola through two timeless works of Italian cinema.
