Aramco’s Q3 Results: Strong Refining Margins Offset Production Challenges as Export Recovery Remains in Focus

Saudi Aramco’s third-quarter results saw adjusted net income rise 9.2% year on year to $31.2 billion, supported by stronger refining margins and higher realised oil prices. However, lower production volumes and ongoing export constraints continue to shape the company’s earnings outlook. With reported net income reaching $36.3 billion, including a one-off gain from the sale of its PRefChem stake, the results offer a mixed picture of Aramco’s financial performance.

The results have drawn attention to the factors shaping Aramco’s performance, from refining margins and cash flow generation to production recovery, export routes and the potential impact of geopolitical developments.

On Aramco’s latest financial performance, Vijay Valecha, Chief Investment Officer at Century Financial, said:

The Q3 results for Aramco have just been released, with the oil giant delivering higher-than-expected profitability, with adjusted net income up 9.2% YoY to $31.2bn, about 8% above consensus, with EPS of $0.15 vs. 36.3bn includes one-off gains from asset divestments, but the underlying result remains strong.

Cash is the strongest part of the story. Free cash flow of $28.2bn (+19%) covered the $21.9bn base dividend about 1.3 times, and gearing fell to 5.5%. The dividend looks secure, which matters for both shareholders and the state.

Refining proved its value. Downstream EBIT more than tripled to a record above $10bn. That shows the integrated model capturing the product-market dislocation, not just higher crude prices.

The next driver is volume. Liquids output rose 15% quarter-on-quarter, and October exports returned to pre-war levels of about 7m b/d. Management says it can lift production to its full 12m b/d capacity. It also sees about 2.4m b/d of demand growth next year, plus around 2m b/d needed to rebuild very low inventories.

In 2026, the East-West Pipeline’s second line was converted from natural gas liquids to crude oil, raising the system’s stated capacity to 7m b/d, up from roughly 2m b/d carried before the conflict.

The system recovered quickly when tested. After drone attacks shut the pipeline, Aramco restarted rapidly. In the meantime, Saudi Arabia sent barrels back east through Hormuz, using a tactic of tankers making repeated trips through the strait. As a result, analysts estimate Saudi crude exports recovered to roughly 6.9m b/d in September. Aramco is also adding overseas storage and alternative export routes.

The valuation leaves plenty of room to catch up. The stock trades at 13.6x forward earnings with a 5.2% yield. Unlike its peers, Aramco actually benefits from a reduction in regional geopolitical tensions through higher production and sales volumes. This gives the stock an implied natural hedge and a likely re-rating path if a deal between the US and Iran materialises.

Examining the factors behind the results, James Wright, Senior Trader at Lunaro Financial Services Limited, said:

Aramco’s net profit rose nearly 35% in the third quarter, but that includes a $6.9bn gain on the sale of its PRefChem stake. Adjusted net income, which strips out one-offs, rose 9% to $31.2bn with some help from lower tax. That was ahead of forecasts but below the previous two quarters, and underlying earnings before interest and tax were almost flat. Higher prices did not fully offset lower volumes and higher royalties, with total production about 17% lower, so upstream earnings fell, while stronger refining margins more than tripled downstream earnings to $10.3bn. Free cash flow covered the dividend this quarter, but remains short of it for the year to date.

The constraint is market access. Aramco is exploring new export routes and overseas storage, and is working to keep crude capacity at 12m barrels a day. Until shipping normalises, earnings are likely to follow oil and the conflict. A US-Iran deal would most likely bring prices down while letting volumes recover, a trade-off that matters for a Saudi economy the IMF expects to contract this year.

From an investor perspective, Madhur Kakkar, CEO and Founder of Elevate Financial Services, said:

Aramco’s 34.5 per cent headline profit increase contrasts with a more modest rise in underlying earnings, as reported net income of $36.3 billion includes a one-off gain from the PRefChem stake sale to Petronas. Adjusted net income of $31.2 billion, up 9 per cent year on year, provides a cleaner measure of performance.

This was a price led rather than volume led quarter on a year-on-year basis, with realized crude prices averaging $95.2 a barrel against $70.1 a year earlier, while total hydrocarbon production fell 17 per cent. Downstream was the standout, with adjusted EBIT more than tripling to $10.3 billion, supported by stronger refining margins.

For GCC investors, the key takeaway is that Aramco’s integrated model is cushioning lower production through stronger prices and refining margins. Free cash flow of $28.2 billion comfortably covered the $21.9 billion base dividend declared for the quarter, helped by a 16 per cent year-on-year decline in capital expenditure to $10.5 billion. The fourth-quarter test is whether refining margins remain elevated and whether any recovery in volumes can offset moderation in prices and margins.
