The Liu Shiming Art Foundation announced the donation of a sculpture called “Silk Road” by the renowned Chinese sculptor, Liu Shiming, to The American University in Cairo (AUC) on February 26, 2023. The bronze sculpture, originally completed in 1986 has been specially reproduced by the foundation for the AUC, four times its original size. The donation marks a significant moment in cultural exchange through art and reflects the spirit of Liu Shiming’s artistic vision.

Born in 1937 in China, Liu Shiming’s career spanned several decades and left an indelible mark on the world of contemporary sculpture. His works are known for their dynamic energy and intricate details, drawing inspiration from the natural world and his Chinese heritage. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout his life, Liu remained committed to his craft and continued to create art and educate young artists until his passing in 2010.

The Liu Shiming Art Foundation was established in honor of the artist’s life and work, with the mission of preserving his legacy and promoting the study and appreciation of various art and culture. Prior to donating “Silk Road” to AUC, the foundation also established the Liu Shiming Scholars Fund at the university in July 2022. This fund will provide support for students studying art and culture, in keeping with Liu’s dedication to education and his belief in the transformative power of art.

The donation of “Silk Road” to AUC is a testament to Liu’s enduring impact on the world of art. The sculpture, which depicts a group of traders traveling along the Silk Road, will serve as a means of dialog not merely with the artist, but with all those peoples represented in the tapestry of civilization, telling about human experience and the ideas that affect individuals. It is also a reminder of the importance of connection and collaboration between different cultures and communities.

As the Liu Shiming Scholars Fund continues to support future generations of artists and scholars, Liu’s legacy will continue to inspire and uplift. His dedication to his craft, his commitment to education, and his belief in the power of art to unite and transform are a lasting testament to his life and work.
